A major new poll is devastating for Biden, but there’s reason for hope

A recent, prominent poll is devastating for President Biden and incomprehensibly generous to Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 election, but there’s still time to course-correct.
Few polls are as high profile or reputable as New York Times/Siena College. For that reason, it was almost certainly devastating to the Biden re-elect campaign when the topline of its most recent poll showed that Trump is currently winning five of the six swing states Biden won in 2020—and will almost certainly need to win again in 2024 if he wants to remain president.
Additionally, Biden is losing support among demographics he can’t afford to lose, including black voters, Hispanic voters, Muslim voters, and women. The reasons vary, from perception on the economy, relative peace and stability, and his management of the war between Israel and Hamas.
However, there’s no reason for—or use in—a nihilistic spiral.
We are still a year from the election. None of Trump’s four high profile criminal trials have begun. Little of Biden’s substantially greater fundraising has been applied. So-called “double hater” voters who dislike both Trump and Biden are inclined to approve of and support Biden when they’ve been told about his accomplishments. And Joe Biden has beaten Donald Trump once before.
Rather than let this poll terrify you, let it motivate you.
If the anti-Trump coalition in the United States can do that, Joe Biden’s victory is assured.
