A Plane Full of Lawmakers Hit on Runway at Ronald Reagan Airport

Ronald Reagan Airport can't seem to catch a break.
A passenger jet with several members of Congress on board was forced to return to its gate Thursday after being struck by another plane's wing on the runway.
The incident took place at Ronald Reagan National Airport, which has had a disturbing number of incidents this year, like the tragedy of American Airlines flight 5432 that collided with a Black Hawk helicopter on approach in January, killing 67 people.
Two Democrats—Meng, of New York, and Gottheimer, of New Jersey—suggested that the Trump administration’s slashing of the Federal Aviation Administration may be to blame.
Two of the democratic members on board took the incident to heart, leading to the following sentiments:
“Just a reminder: Recent cuts to the FAA weaken our skies and public safety,” said Gottheimer.
“I’m grateful no one was hurt today, but this incident underscores this urgent need to restore all FAA jobs that keep our runways safe,” said Meng
Meanwhile, Nick LaLota, a Long Island Republican, shared a photo of the plane’s wing, and called the incident a “once in a lifetime experience.”
The already overburdened FAA has suffered cuts since Trump returned to office, made worse with a round of firings that included those tasked with helping maintain air safety.
Reagan National was already under intense scrutiny after January’s fatal crash. That scrutiny returned last month after a Delta flight narrowly avoided colliding with a U.S. Air Force jet shortly after takeoff.
