Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rebuked House Republican efforts to impeach President Biden during a recent interview with CNN reporter Anderson Cooper.
“What we’re seeing, though, is that they can’t even name what they would impeach the President for,” said AOC. “We have had countless closed door sessions, closed door depositions, we’ve had open door hearings about this—and the Republican Party cannot even name what the crime is that they are alleging the President—or frankly anybody else that they’re trying to investigate—to have committed.”
The Democratic superstar’s remarks evoke a viral exchange from December in which fellow Democrat Joe Neguse asked Republican Guy Reschenthaler to identify the specific charge against President Biden when the impeachment inquiry was debated during a meeting of the House Rules Committee.
When Reschenthaler answered with a boilerplate quote—“bribery, high crimes, and other misdemeanors”—Neguse asked him to identify the specific bribe, high crime, or misdemeanor in question.
Reschenthaler tellingly concluded, “Look, I’ll once I get time, I will explain what we’re looking at.”
The time never came.
AOC interpreted their silence to Cooper: “They don’t have an answer because the president hasn’t done anything impeachable that they’ve been able to prove.”
House Republicans have also signaled this week that could impeach multiple members of the president’s cabinet: Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for the migrant surge at the southern border, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin for failing to disclose his recent hospitalization to the President, and Attorney General Merrick Garland if he declines to arrest Hunter Biden for violating a Congressionally issued subpoena.
