A justifiably-sassy Jake Tapper humiliated Republican Oversight Committee chairman James Comer during a CNN interview about recent developments in the GOP’s efforts to impeach President Biden.

The interview comes after the President’s civilian son, Hunter, was charged with an additional nine felonies by Special Counsel David Weiss, who has been investigating him since 2019.

Weiss, a Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney, was allowed to maintain his post and his sensitive investigation after Biden’s inauguration, despite the President enjoying full authority (and precedent) to fire him and all other Trump-era U.S. attorneys on day one.

Though none of these additional felony charges facing Hunter have anything to do with his father, Comer and other Republicans wasted no time spinning conspiracy theories everywhere they could—including CNN.

During his interview with Tapper, Comer repeatedly suggested that Weiss was charging the President’s son in order to protect him—an incomprehensible argument which amused Tapper.

“Ah,” a smiling Tapper said, drawing the word out dramatically. “Ah, yes. He indicted him to protect him. The classic rubrik! He indicted him to protect him. I got it.”

“Well, look, this whole—Jake, this whole thing’s been about a cover up,” Comer stammered, before adding that Weiss “indict him on the least little thing—the gun charge, not paying taxes—”

“He’s facing an additional 17 years in prison,” Tapper laughed incredulously, “these are felonies!”

After the awkward interview, Tapper sought a reaction from Comer’s Democratic colleague Dan Goldman.

A former prosecutor, Goldman shared Tapper’s disdain, concluding, “Chairman Comer may be a great farmer, Jake, but he has no idea what he’s talking about with criminal law.”
