Floundering Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis dropped a scorching 23-post-deep thread on social media highlighting Donald Trump’s numerous fumbles and gaffes. It’s a brutal broadside against the GOP frontrunner.

It’s also 5 months overdue.

The dubiously-named DeSantis War Room Twitter account will be a favorite for anyone seeking to mock Trump’s mental fitness for office—or in need of a good laugh.

Highlights include Trump’s proclamation that President Biden would trigger “World War II” (which began in 1939 and ended in 1945), his insistence that Republicans should focus on monitoring voters in the 2024 election rather than voting themselves, and even a peculiar comment today in which Trump seemingly suggested that he was the sitting President in 2021.

DeSantis’s willingness to attack Trump has slowly unfurled over many weeks, but it has done nothing for his increasingly dismal polling numbers.

The Florida Governor was once competitive with Trump for the Republican candidacy and though experts will be in a better position to dissect the failures of his campaign once the primary is over, it’s hard to imagine that DeSantis’s refusal to directly engage the man whom he sought to replace as the Republican presidential nominee didn’t play a role.

MAGA Republicans’ perception that Trump is a no-holds-barred brawler is the lifeblood of his stranglehold on the GOP. Accordingly, it seems logical that anyone intending to take Trump’s place would have to mimic that posture.

In contrast, DeSantis alternated between obsequious and avoidant, apparently intending to present himself as a viable alternative to Trump while doing everything possible to not be a stark contrast.

The strategy is bewildering.
