Reince Priebus, the former chairman of the Republican National Committee and chief of staff to Donald Trump, condemned MAGA’s attacks on pop star Taylor Swift as “a powder keg of stupidity.”
His harsh rebuke came during an appearance on ABC’s This Week, hosted by George Stephanopoulos.
“I gotta bring this to you,” Stephanopoulos told Priebus, “because Fox News—or at least several of the personalities on Fox News—seems to have become obsessed with the idea of Taylor Swift helping Joe Biden, some even going so far as to say that it’s part of a conspiracy, a psychological operations conspiracy led by the Pentagon!”
Priebus laughed, stammering an initial response. “I’m not gonna go there. Look, I think the whole thing—”
“That’s really bold!” Stephanopoulous interjected.
“No, I mean I think it’s a powder keg of stupidity,” Priebus conceded. “You talk about two of the most popular things in America: Taylor Swift and the NFL. And we’ve got a party that wants to, y’know, grow the tent. I don’t think attacking those two is obviously the way to go.”
Priebus also insisted that MAGA shouldn’t attack Swift even if she endorses President Biden, the thing her right wing critics seem to dread above all else.
With increasing regularity, right wing media—even on Fox News—have openly attacked, insulted, or maligned Swift as reports suggest the Biden-Harris campaign are seeking her endorsement.
At the time of writing, Swift has not endorsed the president, though she did support him in his 2020 election against Donald Trump.
