George Santos’s Enemies Say They Are Confident They Will Get the Votes to Expel Him

Last week, House Republicans from New York introduced a resolution to expel their pathologically-lying colleague, George Santos, from Congress. Today, they’ve told the media they’re close to securing the 2/3 supermajority of votes needed to make it a reality.

Santos, a freshman Republican from Long Island, has been an anchor around the reputational neck of the GOP since news began to break that he’d openly lied to his constituents during the campaign about broad swathes of his biography.

Matters were made considerably worse when Santos became the target of numerous investigations, both domestic and international.

This culminated in a formidable 23-count indictment from the Justice Department, ranging from conspiracy to wire fraud to money laundering to making materially false statements to the House of Representatives.

There’s little doubt the effort to expel Santos will enjoy the support of all 212 House Democrats, who pushed for a similar effort back in May. That attempt was effectively blocked by Republicans, who deferred it instead to the slow-moving Ethics Committee—and to protect their razor-thin majority.

Freshly-anointed House Speaker Mike Johnson recently signaled to Sean Hannity that he does not support the effort to expel Santos, citing “due process,” but there’s little doubt that if Santos was a Democrat, Johnson wouldn’t hesitate.

Potential expulsion aside, Santos’s unpopularity is extraordinary—nearly 80% of his Long Island constituents want him to resign—suggesting that one way or another, his Congressional career will end in disgrace by January 2025.
