A Republican Congressman humiliated himself during a CNN interview by exposing his party’s egregious double standards about witness compliance with the ongoing investigation into President Biden and his son Hunter.
Greg Murphy, a Republican Congressman from North Carolina who serves on the House Oversight Committee leading the investigation, told CNN anchor John Berman that he would vote to hold Hunter and James Biden in contempt of Congress if either refused to comply with the recently-released subpoena.
Berman countered by reminding Murphy that he once voted against holding former Trump advisor Steve Bannon in contempt of Congress when Bannon refused to comply with a subpoena issued by the January 6th Select Committee when the House was controlled by Democrats.
Murphy bristled, arguing that subpoena compliance is different when the target holds public office. Then, he argued, the target should be held to a higher standard and forced to comply.
Which is fine, in theory. Except neither Hunter nor James Biden hold public office, whereas Steve Bannon was a White House advisor to Donald Trump.
Berman pointed that out to Murphy, who visibly struggled to square the circle. After a few seconds of awkward silence, an agitated Murphy said he was referring to Steve Bannon, not Hunter Biden.
But it was clear Berman had him. Upon further prodding, Murphy became more frustrated and appealed to the fact that Hunter Biden is a relative of the sitting President to justify the double standard.
This is illustrative of the fact that House Republicans have no regard for principle or consistency and will apply whatever standard is convenient at the time to give pretext to their hyperpartisan actions.
