Incumbent Democratic Congressman Dan Kildee announced he will not seek reelection in 2024, making his seat in a key swing state a toss up between the parties.

Kildee’s announcement is merely the latest in a string of such moves.

Republicans Ken Buck, Kay Granger, and Debbie Lesko previously announced they would not seek reelection. Granger proclaimed the need for the next generation to assume leadership roles, Lesko cited the desire to spend more time with family, and Buck is dismayed at the authoritarian direction of his party.

Kildee had said previously that he intended to seek reelection before being waylaid by a cancer diagnosis earlier this year. Though the treatment was successful, he—like Lesko—wants to spend more time with family.

This announcement by Kildee prompted the legendary analyst Dave Wasserman of the Cook Political Report to move Kildee’s seat from “leaning Democratic” to “toss up,” potentially undermining the momentum of the Democratic Party to reclaim the House majority next year.
