After ex-Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy publicly criticized President Biden’s negotiating skills, Vice President Kamala Harris humiliated him in a single sentence: “when anyone who has had the experience McCarthy just had, I don’t think he’s a judge of negotiations.”
The remark, made at the Dealbook Summit in New York, was met with an amused nod from the interviewer and laughter and applause from the audience.
The summit, hosted by the New York Times, features attendees who are “high-level executives, emerging leaders and entrepreneurs from the worlds of financial services, technology, consumer goods, private investment, venture capital, banking, media, public relations, policy, government, academia and more.”
In addition to the Vice President and McCarthy, guests include Elon Musk, JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon, Disney CEO Bob Iger, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, and others.
Hours before the Vice President took the stage, Dealbook interviewer Andrew Ross Sorkin hosted McCarthy.
At one point, the former Speaker suggested that President Biden was “not the same person” he used to talk to, that he read off of cards during negotiations during the debt ceiling crisis, and generally didn’t seem engaged in the negotiation itself.
This remark, in turn, prompted the Vice President’s answer when Sorkin asked her about it later.
Earlier this year, it was reported that despite the public swipes made about the President’s age and cognitive fitness, McCarthy privately told aides that he found Biden “sharp and substantive” during the debt ceiling negotiations—and even McCarthy’s Republican allies conceded Biden got the better of McCarthy in the deal.
