Kari Lake, the deranged MAGA cultist and self-proclaimed Governor of Arizona, is looking for a part-time gig in the United States Senate. She ended weeks of speculation by officially announcing her 2024 candidacy.
Lake, a former television news anchor who’s never held public office before, was previously (and narrowly) defeated by Democrat Katie Hobbs in the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial race. Evoking the lies and futility of her political icon Donald Trump, Lake would spend the next two years losing one absurd appeal after another in a fruitless bid to steal the governor’s mansion. At the time of writing, Governor Hobbs still resides there.
So now, no longer content to demean a single state, Lake and her iconic ring light are attempting to inflict themselves on the rest of America by way of the U.S. Senate. Arizona is a competitive purple state currently represented by Democrat Mark Kelly and independent centrist gadfly (but mostly Democratic-aligned) Kyrsten Sinema. Kelly won’t be up for reelection until 2028, so Sinema’s seat is the target.
Though leaked materials suggest she’s strongly considering it, the wildly unpopular Sinema hasn’t officially announced whether she will run for reelection. She already faces a strong challenge from Ruben Gallego, an ex-Congressman and progressive Democrat.
How Lake’s entrance will impact the political terrain for Arizona’s Senate seat remains to be seen, but she’s already collected the single most important endorsement within the Republican Party: Donald Trump.
