Last week, Kevin McCarthy was the subject of an historic moment… by being ignominiously ejected from a role he’d coveted for years, after the third shortest tenure ever, and—for the first time in American history—by his own party during a legislative session.

In the days after, he declared he would not seek the Speakership again.

A few days after that, McCarthy is publicly teasing that he’d be open to running for Speaker again if House Republicans want him. Time heals all wounds indeed.

Even after attacks against Israel by the terrorist organization Hamas, the House of Representatives is in recess thanks exclusively to the chaos within the House Republican conference.

In the meantime, in a desperate bid to stay relevant, the former Speaker clings to every press podium he can find. As the fighting between Hamas and Israel escalates, McCarthy recently challenged President Biden to “be a leader”—a bold remark from a man who was an historically weak leader.

Moreover, McCarthy condemned Biden’s alleged foreign policy, claiming “appeasement fails, only strength” prevails—more curious commentary for a man whose futile attempts to appease his deranged right flank resulted in his recent embarrassments.

Whatever the state of McCarthy’s ambitious may be, another attempt for the Speakership would almost certainly be more challenging than the first (which required no less than 15 rounds of voting): challengers would include his former lieutenant, Steve Scalise, and Trump-endorsed culture warrior Jim Jordan, both of whom have already announced their interest in the role.

There’s no telling what Kevin McCarthy’s fickle instincts will drive him to do or say next, but it seems unlikely that the majority which removed him from the Speakership wants him to speak more.
