Layoffs and Unemployment Soar to New Highs Thanks to Musk and Trump

Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s cuts to the federal government have caused a record-breaking surge in layoffs.
People who "voted for Trump to fix the economy" must feel the very expensive egg on their faces. Right now, U.S. workers are being laid off at levels not seen since the Great Recession in 2009, all thanks to Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
A new report from Challenger, Gray, and Christmas, an international firm that helps laid-off workers find new jobs, said that job losses rose an astounding 245 percent to 172,017 last month, higher than any month since the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic in July 2020, and the highest in any February since 2009. Trump's mishandling of the covid-19 pandemic contributed to the mass unemployment, by the way.
The biggest source of lost jobs obviously comes from the federal government, with 62,242 jobs cuts from 17 different agencies, according to Challenger. Government layoffs amounted to 62,530 workers in January and February, a staggering 41,311 percent increase over 2024.
This is just the beginning. The Trump administration plans to cut 80,000 employees from Veterans Affairs, 25% of which are veterans themselves.
Musk and his DOGE team are scrambling to make a plan that will fudge the numbers and remove government spending from gross domestic product reports to hide how much DOGE’s government cuts have hurt the economy. Especially since the DOGE team are all pulling in fat paychecks from the agencies they're gutting.
We've yet to feel the impact of DOGE’s mass purge of federal workers will have on the economy, especially since more cuts are expected. The newly unemployed will be spending less money and flooding into the already soft job market.
But it's okay - the richest man in the world said we'll have to suffer a bit for a while until he drains the swamp.
