Multiple Republican politicians have reported receiving death threats because of their lack of support for Jim Jordan’s Speakership bid.

Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Congressman Drew Ferguson, two targets of these threats, issued statements denouncing them.

The wife of Congressman Don Bacon received anonymous text messages demanding Bacon back Jordan’s Speakership, vowing “your husband will not hold any political office again” otherwise.

Though Jordan himself also denounced the threats, these tactics are commensurate with the ever-increasing violence animating the MAGA movement, thanks in large part to Donald Trump, whose rhetoric is also becoming increasingly violent.

Multiple Republican politicians have publicly called for civil war in the event of Trump’s indictment, conviction, or electoral defeat. Likewise, Trump supporters issued calls to violent action in response to his indictments, alarming political violence experts and scholars.

For these reasons, Jordan’s public denunciation rings hollow given his devotion to Trump and the MAGA ethos. By supporting its source and working faithfully with its supporters, it can easily be argued that Jim Jordan is morally culpable for this escalation.
