Progressive MSNBC host Chris Hayes interviewed clean energy activist David Roberts about a series of Tweets Roberts authored in which he lamented the crippling asymmetry of expectations imposed on the Democratic Party by its enemies, its allies, and those in between.
In his posts on X (formerly Twitter), Roberts breaks down this frustrating dynamic in detail.
“If you're on the right, shitting on Dems is how you demonstrate the shared hatreds that make you part of the tribe,” Roberts explained. “If you're on the center-left, shitting on Dems is how you demonstrate the above-it-all independence that earns the admiration of peers.”
He then turned his ire to the allegedly “liberally biased” mainstream media: “If you're in the media, shitting on Dems is how you fight off accusations of bias & establish your "objectivity.”
Roberts reaffirmed this assessment in his subsequent interview with Hayes, explaining that all the major political factions and their corresponding constituencies are incentivized to be highly critical and dissatisfied with the Democratic Party—though he empathized with the need of progressive activists to drag their closest political proxy further to the right.
“You’ll notice there’s no one left who just wants to go tell voters what Democrats have accomplished,” Roberts concluded.
And as the 2024 election rapidly approaches, that unsettling sentiment will have to change, lest we surrender the country to Republican rule under Donald Trump.
