As Donald Trump crashed the stock market, Elon Musk and his teenage DOGE goons crashed the Social Security website because apparently, an “anti-fraud upgrade” went badly wrong. Sounds like the existing anti-fraud measure was doing its job.
This issue left elderly people and low-income families without access to their information, making applying for government services and making or receiving payments nearly impossible. Allegedly, DOGE’s tech staff appeared not to have tested anti-fraud measures to make sure they could deal with a high volume of users.
Because of DOGE's overreach, vulnerable Americans in need of social assistance were met with a message reading “We’re sorry, but the online service you requested isn’t available right now. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
The website crash is another blow to many of the 7.4 million adults and children receiving monthly benefits under the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. Even when people were able to access the site, some people said they had been unable to sign into their accounts. Others found that after signing in, most of their information was missing.
People are also anxious about further interruptions in assistance with Musk cutting around 7,000 workers since he and Trump took office - and the administration plans to fire thousands more.
The website crash isn’t the first issue caused by DOGE's irresponsible and unregulated destruction of Social Security. People have also reported long wait times on calls, the loss of direct deposit payments, and online accounts malfunctioning. Last month, the wait time for those needing disability assistance skyrocketed from 20 minutes to over 200 days.
Last month, a court blocked DOGE from accessing sensitive SSA data, while another lawsuit challenged the government’s legal ability to implement mass layoffs. None of these ruling have stopped the life altering carnage being done to our federal workers and the Americans who need them.
