During a recent appearance on the Daily Show, Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace was mocked, heckled, and laughed at by the studio audience after downplaying Donald Trump’s numerous indictments.

The representative from South Carolina initially started strong, establishing rapport with Daily Show guest host Charlamagne tha God. Additionally, she reiterated her support for the LGBTQ+ community and her calls for disgraced colleague George Santos to resign.

It’s easy to see why Mace enjoys a reputation of being a reasonable moderate—however misplaced.

She has publicly criticized her party’s failure to court women voters—thanks to their extreme pro-forced-birth policies. She has joked about or taken public shots at controversial members of her caucus. She is regularly interviewed by mainstream news outlets. She has received accolades from Jake Tapper and Bill Maher among others.

On the other hand, Mace has voted for the very same abortion bills she’s criticized and openly deems alienating. She may joke about Matt Gaetz’s many scandals, but she gleefully allied with him to remove Kevin McCarthy from the Speakership. She supplements her mainstream news appearances with regular, aggressively partisan rhetoric on Fox News.

Furthermore, she has undermined both her stated support for LGBTQ+ rights—by enthusiastically supporting the religiously bigoted Mike Johnson for House Speaker—and her stated opposition to George Santos by refusing to support his expulsion.

Mace’s reflexive hypocrisy is ultimately what chilled her initially-warm reception on the Daily Show. After she signaled her support for the ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Biden, Charlamagne challenged her to take a similar stance on Donald Trump’s many indictments.

But Mace balked, clumsily insisting she knows nothing about those indictments and their constituent evidence, appealing to “due process,” and insisting that Trump—whom she would not name—would “take responsibility” if found guilty.

The host who had previously indulged her and the audience which had previously applauded her began to laugh at, mock, and boo her.
