Two years after President Biden signed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg provided an update to the American people as the White House put on blast some Republicans who opposed the law but try to take credit for it now.
Secretary Buttigieg narrated a nearly 3 minute long video recapping the dire straits of American infrastructure prior to Biden’s inauguration and the persistent failures of the Trump administration to remedy the situation.
Buttigieg then reminded the audience of the unlikely bipartisan success under the President’s leadership: several Republicans—19 in the Senate and 13 in the House of Representatives—voted with Democratic majorities in both chambers to pass the $1.2 trillion bill.
Additionally, the Secretary informed Americans that 37,000 projects had been triggered using resources allocated by the Infrastructure law, which in turn had created “hundreds of thousands” of jobs.
Meanwhile, the official White House Twitter page adopted a more combative tone by identifying a handful of Republican politicians who were trying to take credit for or associate themselves with the infrastructure law—despite voting against it.
Among others, the White House put Senators Tommy Tuberville and Tom Cotton on blast before concluding with a recitation of the President’s trademark quote for such Republicans: “We’ll see you at the groundbreaking.”
As we approach the 2024 election, Democrats and their surrogates should remind the nation of successes like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and CHIPS Act—as well as emphasizing the sharp contrast between their party and the alternative.
