Pathologically-lying fraud George Santos was officially expelled from the House of Representatives, reducing the House Republican majority to a mere three seats.
Santos enjoys the distinction of becoming the fifth Congressman to ever be removed from the House of Representatives, alongside three Confederates in 1861 and a disgraced Democrat from Ohio in 2002.
The expulsion required a two-thirds supermajority of 290 votes; Santos’s removal garnered even more, 311, though a slight majority of Republicans attempted to save him.
Santos’s removal was immediately effective. He reportedly left the Capitol before the vote was officially concluded and therefore missed the forlorn tone of Speaker Mike Johnson’s voice when he declared the final tally.
Johnson, along with the three other House Republican leaders, voted against expelling Santos.
The seat Santos once occupied for New York’s 3rd Congressional district is now vacant and the Republican majority is reduced to a mere three seats. New York’s Democratic Governor, Kathy Hochul, will announce a special election in 10 days to be held in the coming months.
The district was previously occupied by Democrats for a decade prior to Santos’s surprise win in 2022.
Though Santos has recently declared he would not run for office again, expulsion from Congress does not render him ineligible for future attempts, leaving the door open.
After all, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s lied.
