Republican Speaker Mike Johnson publicly announced he would only release more January 6th footage—after his staff deliberately edits the footage to prevent insurrectionists from being identified and potentially prosecuted by the Justice Department.

It was a shocking admission from the most powerful elected member of the so-called “party of law and order.”

It was an ironic one because, prior to announcing his effort to edit the footage, Johnson accused the bipartisan House January 6th Select Committee of being biased and narrative driven.

He insisted that his goal was “transparency” so the American people could come to a completely unbiased conclusion.

“As you know, we have to blur some of the faces of persons who participated in the events of that day because we don’t want them to be retaliated against,” Johnson said, before adding explicitly, “or be charged by the DOJ!”

Though the Justice Department presumably has all the same January 6th footage Congress does, Johnson’s goal seems to prevent the American public from assisting the DOJ by combing through the 40,000 hours of footage to help identify suspects, which would help expedite an otherwise gargantuan process.
