Republicans Intend to Impeach Multiple Biden Officials

Republican Congressman James Comer suggested that Republicans may attempt to impeach Attorney General Merrick Garland if he doesn’t arrest Hunter Biden.

It’s the latest development in a veritable impeachment storm triggered by House Republicans, which also includes President Biden, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and, most recently, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

Late last year, Hunter Biden, the president’s son and a private citizen, refused to comply with a subpoena issued by House Republicans and instead accepted a repeatedly-extended invitation by the GOP to appear before a public Congressional hearing.

The younger Biden expressed his skepticism that Republicans would conduct a fair and transparent hearing behind closed doors, suggesting they would instead conceal his testimony except for that which could be parsed out and weaponized against his father.

The Republicans refused, rescinding their previous offers, and demanded the president’s son comply or face a contempt of Congress charge—which is usually referred to the Justice Department for enforcement, including the arrest of the contempt charge’s subject.

In this context, Comer suggested that Attorney General Garland could face impeachment alongside his boss if he refuses to enforce the contempt charge and arrest Hunter Biden.

Additionally, Republicans declared their intent to impeach Secretary Mayorkas for the migrant surge at the southern border.

Though a cabinet secretary hasn’t been impeached since the 19th century, Mayorkas is likely a more politically-feasible target for swing-district Republicans than the president, particularly with polling surrounding the border being so favorable to Republicans.

Despite reports that Senate Republicans are working a deal with Democrats to address the southern border, House Republicans have made it clear they intend to use it as a political wedge issue: Congressman Troy Nehls told the media that he refuses to give President Biden a political victory by working with Democrats.

Defense Secretary Austin is another recent target for impeachment, particularly after news broke that he had been hospitalized for days without notifying President Biden.
