During a recent podcast episode, right wing commentator Charlie Kirk declared pop star

Taylor Swift is “gonna destroy the country” because she is successfully registering young voters.

Kirk’s proclamation is merely the latest demonstration of his protracted anti-Swift hysteria. In numerous social media posts and videos, Kirk and co-host Jack Posobiec attributed Republicans’ poor performance in the 2023 elections to Swift and her “abortion army” of young female voters.

Swift, who was committedly apolitical until 2018, made her opposition to Donald Trump and the current iteration of the Republican Party known by endorsing Democratic candidates in her home state of Tennessee. She has also criticized Tennessee’s Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn for her anti-woman rhetoric and voting record.

Kirk and Posobiec, two conservatives with wildly unpopular policy positions, specifically fear Swift’s influence on the younger, relatively-voting-apathetic Millennial and Z generations. Her calls to action in 2018 and 2023 triggered thousands upon thousands of new voter registrations according to Vote.org

With Republican pop star power diminished, reduced to the likes of Kid Rock and ‘80s shredder Ted Tugent, their fear of a politically active progressive pop icon like Taylor Swift heading into an important election year is as understandable as it is delightful.
