Departing Republican Senator Mitt Romney offered a number of blunt—but not impolite—answers to questions posed to him by Kristen Welker of Meet the Press, all pertaining to the 2024 election.
Romney, who recently announced he would not be seeking reelection as one of Utah’s representatives in the U.S. Senate, has become increasingly outspoken about his party’s moral and Constitutional deficits.
But don’t think for a second that he’s swung his sail to become a Democrat.
When Welker asked him to react to a sentiment expressed by former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney—who in many ways is a kindred spirit of Romney’s in 2023—that the country is safer in the hands of Democrats than Republicans, Romney hesitated to concur.
“Well, President Biden’s policies have not worked for America,” Romney said. “I know the economic statistics are looking better, but the American people are hurting.”
Romney went on to say that there were some unnamed Democrats he wished would run and said frankly that he hopes Biden is not the Democratic nominee.
When Welker pressed him to take a stance on the probable Biden/Trump rematch in 2024, Romney replied: “Well, the Joe I’d like to vote for is Joe Manchin,” before adding he doesn’t think Manchin will run.
After Welker pressed him further by asking if he’d rule out voting for Biden, Romney noted the only person whom he’s ruled out is Trump.
“You have a setting where you have someone who’s too old and someone else who’s too nutty. Where are you gonna vote on that basis?”
However, he did offer some hint that he is willing to vote for Biden: “By the way, in my view, bad policy we can overcome as a country. We have in the past. Bad character is something which is very difficult to overcome.”
