Freshman Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett publicly put Donald Trump, the Heritage Foundation, and the Republican Party in general on blast—triggering Marjorie Taylor Greene in the process.
During a meeting of the Republican-controlled House Oversight committee concerning trans athletes in sports—a pet culture war issue of right wingers across the country, despite the fact that experts ballpark the number of trans athletes at a mere 100—Crockett’s words laid waste to numerous targets.
Regarding Trump and the GOP, Crockett reminded her Republican colleagues that they have enthusiastically endorsed a leader and presidential candidate who was recently found liable for sexual abuse—rejecting their empty virtue signaling that they cared about the plight of American women.
Regarding the Heritage Foundation, Crockett put one of the GOP’s witnesses (a member of the Heritage Foundation) on blast for using red states like Texas and Florida to inflict their regressively right wing agenda onto the rest of the country.
In so doing, Crockett accidentally used the phrase “deplorable states” when she meant to say “deplorable bills”—Crockett is a resident and representative of Texas and so presumably doesn’t find her own state deplorable—which in turn triggered Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Greene declared a “point of order” and demanded Crockett’s phrase be stricken from the record.
Though Democratic ranking member Jamie Raskin quickly explained to Greene that this demand doesn’t constitute a point of order, Greene persisted… and was met with an awkward rejection from Republican chairwoman Lisa McClain, who was forced to rule against Greene after spending several seconds futilely conferring with colleagues in an attempt to support her.
Greene then took to Twitter to complain that Crockett’s remarks “insulted half of the country,” conveniently forgetting the many times she, Trump, and other Republicans have made insulting remarks about blue cities and states—typically California and New York.
Crockett in turn mocked Greene’s defeat in her own Twitter post: “It’s a bad day when the Republican chair has to rule in my favor. LEARN the rules before trying to check me.”
