Republican Senator and MAGA surrogate Tim Scott falsely proclaimed during a Fox News town hall that Donald Trump is the president who “brought the most money in for historically black colleges and universities.”

Scott, who is rumored to be on Trump’s short list as his 2024 running mate and vice presidential candidate, was regurgitating a common lie among Trump supporters.

Historically black colleges and universities—HBCUs—have received federal funding since the 1960s.

In the final years of the Bush administration, a law was passed requiring a 2-year mandatory funding program for HBCUs. The program was resurrected under President Obama, who increased its funding tenfold for ten years.

When Trump took office, he attempted to kill the funding outright but failed thanks to the efforts of North Carolina Democrat Alma Adams.

Under President Biden, HBCUs have received far more funding than at any other point in history, receiving $2.7 billion from Biden’s American Rescue Plan.

Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett and progressive commentator Roland Martin have made high profile refutations of claims surrounding Trump and HBCU funding, but the lies persist.
