At a recent rally in New Hampshire, an addled Donald Trump confused his current Republican presidential rival Nikki Haley with former Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in a rambling tangent about the January 6th insurrection.
“By the way, they never report the crowd on January 6th,” Trump said. “You know, Nikki Haley—Nikki Haley—Nikki Haley… you know—do you know they destroyed all of the information, all of the evidence, everything? Deleted it, destroyed all of it. All of it. Because of—lots of things. Like, Nikki Haley was in charge of security. We offered her 10,000 people—soldiers, National Guard soldiers, whatever they want. They turned it down. They don’t wanna talk about it. These are very dishonest people.”
Though public sentiment is softening on the insurrection three years later, a majority of Americans still regard it as a horrific moment in the nation’s history and hold blame Trump for it at least in part.
The insurrection also plays a central role in major legal and Constitutional challenges facing the former president.
Special Counsel Jack Smith is prosecuting Trump in part for his role in fomenting the riot and multiple lawsuits challenging Trump’s eligibility to hold office refer to January 6th in claims that he is disqualified under the 14th Amendment, which bars insurrectionists from holding public office.
Trump has attempted for years to shift responsibility to other parties, including Speaker Pelosi and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, claiming that they rejected his offer for additional Capitol security—though neither of them had the authority to countermand a sitting president’s deployment order to the D.C. National Guard.
Though more Americans are concerned with President Biden’s perceived mental fitness, Trump has publicly displayed an increasing number of gaffes and incoherent tangents in the past six months.
