President Biden trolled Donald Trump in a new campaign video touting recent stock market performance—despite the fact that Trump prophesied the markets would crash under Biden.
During the 2020 presidential election, Trump repeatedly predicted that the stock market would crash if he lost reelection to Biden. This doomsday prophecy was regularly declared by Trump and his supporters even after the election and throughout Biden’s nearly-three years in office, even during recent MAGA rallies.
And yet, on Wednesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a record high… under Joe Biden.
“How did that work out, Donald?” asks the Biden-Harris official Twitter page above a 30 second video from their campaign.
The video begins with one of Trump’s promises that Biden would wreck the stock market before transitioning into audio and video footage of various news outlets—including Fox—celebrating Wednesday’s stock market performance, spliced with footage of the President grinning and donning his iconic aviator sunglasses.
Economists will tell you that though U.S. presidents are powerful, they have little direct control over stock market performance. But since Trump and Republicans always claimed credit for positive economic news while they were in power, it’s fitting that President Biden and Democrats do the same.
By the Right’s own standard, Joe Biden is presiding over an objectively strong economy based on macroeconomic data—even if the polling perception is very different.
