Republican Governor Chris Sununu of New Hampshire attacked Donald Trump and his record during a CNN interview with Jake Tapper.
Sununu, who endorsed Trump’s rival Nikki Haley and has been a vigorous surrogate for her campaign, was asked by Tapper to react to a quote from Ohio Republican Senator J.D. Vance:
“The Republican Party without Donald Trump is a disaster, morally and politically. It’s endless wars, open orders, and tax cuts for the people who benefit from endless wars and open borders. Basically, it’s Nikki Haley’s platform, which is why we so desperately need to beat her.”
“With Donald Trump at the head of the party we lose,” Sununu replied. “We lost in 2020, we should have had the red wave in 2022—but he's a loser, his candidates are losers. I’m tired of losing. He doesn’t bring the right brand, if you will, to the table. And he doesn’t galvanize the party or the country together.”
As Tapper smiled placidly, Sununu then turned his ire to Vance.
“So I appreciate that J.D. Vance is hoping to get another job in Washington D.C. because he joined the Senate, realized they don’t do much, and wants another job with the president,” Sununu said. “But at the end of the day, all these guys who are kowtowing to the president? I’ve talked to them all behind the scenes. They don’t respect this guy, they’re just kowtowing to him out of fear and the hope to get another gig.”
Haley placed third in Iowa’s Republican caucuses behind Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who dropped out after. She performed better in New Hampshire, securing 45% of the vote, but still lost to Trump by an 8-point margin.
Haley has refused to suspend her campaign, insisting it will continue at least through the contest in South Carolina—her home state.
For his part, despite his harsh assessment of Donald Trump, Sununu has repeatedly pledged to support him if he’s the Republican nominee.
