More people voted to bar trans athletes from competing than there are trans athletes competing.
How Does This Protect Anyone?
Trump hasn't even taken office and things are already getting worse for the Right's designated scapegoats. This past Tuesday the House voted to ban transgender students from girls' and women's sports, with two Democrats joining every single Republican in support of the bill.
In a country where gun violence kills thousands of children a year, 9 million children live below the poverty line, and 1.5 million children are experiencing homelessness - THIS is how Republicans choose to "save the kids".
The "Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act" passed the GOP-led House by a vote of 218 to 206. Reps. Henry Cuellar and Vincente Gonzalez, both Democrats from Texas, voted to support the bill, which would amend Title IX to recognize a person's sex as "based solely on a person's reproductive biology and genetics at birth."
According to a 2022 study by the Williams Institute only 0.5% of Americans identify as transgender. HALF of one percent. Approximately 1.3 million people in total. Of that 1.6 million, 300,000 children aged 13-17 identify as transgender. Of that 300,000 39% (117,000) identify themselves as girls. An entire bill, meant to regulate 117,000 people. Most of whom don't even play sports.
Democrats, who nicknamed the bill the "Child Predator Empowerment Act," claimed the measure would allow for intrusive genital examinations of girls.
This bill will no doubt subject young girls to invasive questions about their bodies and physical inspections by adult strangers. I'm sure Matt Gaetz is thrilled.
Important Takeaways
300,000 American children are victims of commercial sexual exploitation each year. Where's the bill to protect them?
Perfect example of a solution in search of a problem.
